Court Issues Order Restricting Locations and Actions for Inter-University Student Federation Protest in Colombo Today

The Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage issued a court order in relation to the planned protest organized by the Inter-University Student Federation in Colombo. The court order comes as a response to the anticipated demonstration scheduled for today, the 10th of August.

The court order, issued by Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage, entails a series of restrictions aimed at regulating the conduct of the protest and maintaining public order. The order notably prohibits the agitators from accessing specific locations of importance, including the Fort President's Secretariat, the Presidential Palace, the Prime Minister's Office, and Galumuwadora Pitiya.

In addition to the location restrictions, the magistrate's order also explicitly forbids any obstruction of the streets. This is intended to ensure the smooth flow of traffic and prevent any potential disturbances in the vicinity.

The court order, while imposing these limitations, upholds the right to peaceful assembly and protest. Magistrate Thilina Gamage clarified that peaceful protests are permitted, as long as they adhere to the conditions outlined in the court order.

To ensure compliance with the court order, Magistrate Thilina Gamage directed the Fort Police to promptly deliver copies of the order to the protest organizers and participants. This proactive measure aims to inform the demonstrators of the legal boundaries within which their protest activities should take place.

The court order specifically targets 10 individuals, among them Madhushan Chandrajit, who is identified as the convener of the Inter-University Student Federation. These individuals are expected to adhere to the court's directives, failing which they could face legal consequences.
