SJB MP Dr. Harsha de Silva highlighted the presentation of the Betting and Gaming Levy Amendment Bill in Parliament, aiming to reform levies for betting and gaming businesses.
“Concerns about transparency and regulation in the industry were raised. The Committee on Public Finance (COPF) played a key role, thoroughly examining the proposal. COPF repeatedly denied approval due to the absence of a gaming regulator, which led to unmonitored activities,” De Silva said.
Emphasizing responsible governance, COPF called for a regulatory authority to oversee casinos and areas like online betting, not covered by existing laws.
He also added, “The Ministry of Finance (MoF) acknowledged these concerns and committed to creating a timeline and action plan for a gaming regulator.
After further discussions, COPF approved the bill contingent upon the establishment of a gaming regulator by year-end. A sub-committee was formed, mandated by the President, to assist MoF in this complex endeavor, showcasing efforts to reshape the sector beyond levy revisions.”
