United National Party Working Committee Decide to Change Constitution

The United National Party (UNP) Working Committee has decided to change the party's constitution in order to match the changing political landscape in Sri Lanka. The decision was made at a meeting of the Working Committee on Thursday, which was chaired by UNP leader President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The Working Committee also agreed to reinstate the membership of Manusha Nanayakkara and Harin Fernando, who were removed from the UNP Working Committee for joining the Samagi Jana Balawega (SJB) last year.

In addition to the constitutional changes, the Working Committee also discussed strengthening the Executive Council, making the Executive Council a decision-making body, creating a separate committee for conducting political work, and organizing the party in accordance with the online system.

The 77th UNP Congress will be held on September 10, under the chairmanship of Wickremesinghe. The congress will be the first opportunity for the UNP to elect its leadership since the party's defeat in the 2020 general election.
