Drought Crisis: Rapidly Receding Water Levels in Hydropower Reservoirs Raise Concerns of Potential Power Cuts

Severe drought conditions are causing a rapid decline in water levels across hydropower generating reservoirs in the country. Officials have warned that if the drought persists, there could be power cuts as the country may not be able to produce sufficient electricity.

The situation is becoming critical as water levels in most reservoirs continue to drop, affecting water supply to both the reservoirs and crops.

The Mahaweli Authority reports that many Mahaweli reservoirs are now at the 50 percent limit. Specifically, the Samanala Reservoir's water capacity has significantly decreased, and if no water is received within the next ten days, the Southern Province may experience power cuts lasting from one to three hours.

Moreover, the low water level in the Victoria Reservoir will further disrupt hydropower generation.
