In a new towards promoting women's empowerment and political participation, the Women's Parliamentary Caucus of Sri Lanka has initiated a transformative study tour to New Zealand, made possible through the funding of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID Sri Lanka).
The program, which commenced today, aims to provide invaluable insights into the successes of women in politics and governance.
The Women's Parliamentary Caucus members from Sri Lanka have a comprehensive itinerary ahead, which includes a series of meetings with esteemed politicians from various parties in New Zealand. Today marked a historic occasion as they were honored to engage in dialogue with two trailblazing leaders who have shattered glass ceilings and left an indelible mark on New Zealand's political landscape – the former Prime Ministers, Helen Clarke and Jacinda Ardern.
The first meeting was with Helen Clarke, a formidable leader who served as the 37th Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1999 to 2008. Clarke's progressive policies and relentless commitment to social and economic development have made her an iconic figure not only in New Zealand but also on the global stage.
Subsequently, the Women's Parliamentary Caucus had the privilege of sitting down with Jacinda Ardern, who made history as New Zealand's youngest Prime Minister and its first female leader in over 30 years. Ardern's compassionate leadership and empathetic approach have earned her widespread admiration and respect, both domestically and internationally.
