The government has decided to revoke the additional privileges granted to former presidents outside of the Presidential Privileges Act.
This decision comes after a case was brought before the Supreme Court challenging the extensive privileges enjoyed by former presidents, which were not explicitly mentioned in the existing legislation.
As per the current Presidential Privileges Act, former presidents are entitled to certain benefits, including a pension, a residence, three vehicles, fuel allowance, and a private secretary. However, over time, various extra perks, such as the payment of water and electricity bills, had been extended to former presidents, raising questions about the transparency and legality of such allowances.
In compliance with the court's ruling, the government has taken action to align the privileges accorded to former presidents strictly within the confines of the Presidential Privileges Act.
A senior government spokesperson stated that the move aims to ensure fairness and accountability in the allocation of public resources. By adhering to the provisions laid out in the Presidential Privileges Act, the government seeks to bring greater clarity and uniformity to the benefits provided to former presidents.
