Sri Lanka Cricket Chairman, Shammi Silva, declared today that he and other officials will step down from their positions if allegations of spending on actors and actresses during last year's T20 World Cup in Australia are substantiated.
Speaking at a special press conference held at the Sri Lanka Cricket, Shammi Silva asserted that the Sri Lanka Cricket Board had indeed issued letters of invitation to actors, actresses, and their friends to participate in the tournament. However, he strongly refuted claims that any funds were disbursed by the board for their involvement.
The involvement of these celebrities, according to Chairman Silva, was to boost morale and support the Sri Lankan cricket team during the international event in Australia. He further revealed that the same actors and actresses would also be present to encourage the national team during the upcoming matches in Sri Lanka.
Jayantha Dharmadasa, the Vice President of the Sri Lanka Cricket Board, also present at the press conference, supported Silva's stance. He explicitly denied engaging in any travel activities with the celebrities and asserted that no financial transactions took place between the board and the actors and actresses.
The allegations had raised concerns among the cricketing community, leading to the press conference where the board officials responded to the allegations.
