SSP Apologizes in Court for False Charges Against Constable: Seven Police Officers to be Suspended and Prosecuted for Malicious Prosecution

In a display of accountability and justice, Senior Superintendent of Police, Director of the Special Investigation Bureau of the Police Headquarters, D.S. Wickramasinghe, publicly apologized to a police constable in court for the grave injustice done to him. The police constable, who was attached to Thanthirimale Police, was falsely charged with possessing cannabis, leading to a harrowing ordeal for the innocent officer.

The apology took place before Medavachchiya Magistrate Priyantha Halyala, where Senior Superintendent of Police Wickramasinghe openly acknowledged the wrongful arrest and charges filed against the constable. He revealed that a thorough investigation, initiated on the orders of the Inspector General of Police, had uncovered the truth behind the case. It was discovered that the charges against the constable were fabricated as a means of revenge against him.

The Senior Superintendent of Police further assured the court that action would be taken against the responsible parties. Seven police officers, including the station commander of the divisional anti-corruption division, will face suspension and prosecution for their involvement in the malicious prosecution.

The police constable, identified as Mr. Sadun (Police Constable 83840), had endured significant hardship due to the false accusations. The case against him was ultimately withdrawn by the Anti-Corruption Division of Anuradhapura Division. Senior Superintendent of Police, who oversaw the withdrawal of the case, is presently suspended.

During the court proceedings, the defense lawyer expressed gratitude to the Inspector General of Police and the department for conducting a thorough investigation and bringing to light the innocence of his client. He also appreciated the commitment to withdraw the false charges and take action against those responsible for abusing the law.
