In a groundbreaking move, Chandani Wijewardena has been appointed as the Acting Presidential Secretary, marking the first time in history that a woman has assumed this prestigious position. The appointment was made as Saman Ekanayake, the current President's Secretary, accompanies the President on an official visit to India.
Effective from today, July 20, Wijewardena's appointment will continue until Ekanayake returns to the island. The decision to appoint her as the Acting Presidential Secretary reflects the government's commitment to gender equality and recognition of women's leadership capabilities in top administrative roles.
Chandani Wijewardena brings a wealth of experience to her new role, having served as a senior civil servant with a distinguished career spanning nearly three decades. Eventually, she assumed the position of Director General of the Planning Department, where she showcased exceptional leadership and strategic planning skills.
In addition to her accomplishments in the Treasury, Wijewardena has an impressive track record in various ministries. Notably, she served as the Secretary of the Ministry of Development Strategy and International Trade from 2015 to 2019.
