Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna's Colombo District Member of Parliament, Sarath Weerasekera, has vehemently refuted accusations made by the Sri Lanka Bar Association that he threatened the judiciary during a parliamentary session.
In a letter addressed to the association's chairman, Weerasekera strongly denied any wrongdoing and defended his conduct in Parliament.
In his correspondence, Weerasekera asserted that he possesses a deep understanding of parliamentary decorum and how to conduct himself appropriately as an elected representative. He emphasized his respect for the judiciary, dismissing the allegations as baseless.
Weerasekera further expressed his intention to inform the Bar Association about the destruction of Buddhist heritage in the northern region of the country, suggesting that they redirect their attention to this pressing issue. The MP urged the association to witness firsthand the damage caused by individuals he referred to as "thugs."
Highlighting what he perceived as a double standard, Weerasekera drew attention to the Bar Association's alleged failure to address a statement made by Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Member of Parliament, Sumandiran, concerning the Supreme Court. Weerasekera insinuated that fear played a role in the association's silence regarding Sumandiran's remarks.
