Vijitha Herath, the Parliamentarian representing the National People's Power (NPP) party, has announced his resignation from the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) responsible for investigating the reasons behind the country's economic bankruptcy.
This decision comes amidst growing concerns over the impartiality of the committee and its close associations with the ruling party.
The PSC, chaired by Sagara Kariyawasam, the General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), has faced criticism due to Kariyawasam's close ties to former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa. Rajapaksa's tenure has been widely scrutinized as the country's economy suffered a severe downturn under his watch.
Herath's decision to step down from the committee reflects a loss of faith in its ability to conduct an unbiased investigation. The NPP Parliamentarian expressed concerns regarding the committee's composition, pointing out that several ruling party MPs involved in the PSC had strong connections to the Rajapaksa family, which has been blamed for the economic downfall.
The main opposition party, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), has also expressed vehement opposition to the appointments made to the PSC. They argue that the committee lacks the necessary independence and impartiality to objectively assess the causes of the country's economic crisis.
