The opposition leader, Sajith Premadasa, expressed apprehension regarding the appointment of Podujana Peramuna Secretary General Sagara Kariyawasam as the chairman of the selection committee tasked with investigating the reasons behind the country's bankruptcy.
He cautioned that there is a risk of the selection committee becoming a mere talk shop and potentially providing an avenue for the Basil Rajapaksa-led group to evade accountability.
Furthermore, Premadasa highlighted the efforts made by supporters of Basil Rajapaksa to delay the passing of the Anti-Corruption Act by an additional two weeks. Despite their attempts, the Act was ultimately passed, prompting concerns that Rajapaksa's associates may attempt to shield themselves from scrutiny during this temporary break.
Premadasa voiced these concerns during his address to the executive council of the opposition today (10), shedding light on the potential risks associated with the appointment of the selection committee and the need for vigilant oversight to ensure transparency and accountability in the process.
