Tensions ran high in Parliament today as opposition leader Sajith Premadasa and a group of opposition party members staged a protest against the appointment of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna MP Sagara Kariyawasam as the chairman of the special committee tasked with examining the causes of financial bankruptcy and providing recommendations. Additionally, ruling party MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage has also been appointed as a member of the committee.
The move by the government to appoint MP Sagara Kariyawasam as the committee chairman drew strong opposition from Mr. Sajith Premadasa and his supporters. Amidst heated exchanges, the opposition voiced their concerns, stating that they believe the appointment is not impartial and could compromise the integrity and objectivity of the committee's proceedings.
Mr. Lakshman Kiriella, the chief opposition whip, highlighted that it was the Samagi Jana Balawegaya party that initially proposed the establishment of a special committee to investigate the country's financial bankruptcy. The opposition maintains that their intention was to ensure a fair and independent examination of the causes behind the economic crisis, and they question the suitability of MP Sagara Kariyawasam for the crucial role of chairman.
