Foreign Minister Ali Sabry announced that China has decided not to participate in the official creditors' platform negotiating a common debt treatment plan with Sri Lanka. However, he expressed confidence in China's bilateral support for the island nation's economic recovery.
During a media conference in Colombo on Monday, Minister Sabry revealed that he had recently visited China and held meetings with the Foreign Minister, Finance Minister, and Chairman of the Export-Import Bank of China. He stated that China has conveyed their decision to not join the common platform but assured Sri Lanka of their bilateral assistance.
"We are very hopeful of China's cooperation. They have said they will not come on board the common platform...but will support us bilaterally. We are very confident," Minister Sabry stated, emphasizing Sri Lanka's confidence in China's commitment to assisting their economic recovery.
This development indicates that while China will not participate in the collective approach taken by official creditors, they remain supportive of Sri Lanka on a bilateral basis, reinforcing the ongoing relationship between the two countries.
