Approximately ten individuals gathered this morning outside the Thai embassy in Colombo to voice their opposition to the repatriation of the injured tusker, Muthu Raja, also known as Sak Surin. Scheduled to depart for a Thai elephant hospital on July 1, Muthu Raja had sustained injuries during its stay at Kande Viharaya.
The protest was organized by a group of concerned citizens who believe that Muthu Raja should not be returned to Thailand and instead be provided with necessary medical care in Sri Lanka. The demonstrators, comprising animal welfare activists and local residents, held placards bearing slogans such as "Save Muthu Raja" and "Treat Injured Elephants Here."
Muthu Raja, a prominent tusker residing at Kande Viharaya, had become a beloved figure within the local community. However, in recent weeks, concerns arose regarding the animal's well-being after it suffered wounds of unknown origin. The decision to transport Muthu Raja to a Thai elephant hospital for specialized treatment sparked controversy among those who argue that Sri Lanka should have the necessary facilities to handle such cases.
