Environmental Activists Threaten Legal Action Against Controversial Dagoba Construction on Bathalegala Rock

In a shocking development that has sparked widespread criticism, plans to construct a dagoba atop the environmentally sensitive and scenic Batalegala Rock have drawn the attention of environmental activists. The Centre for Environmental Justice (CEJ), led by Hemantha Withanage, has announced its intention to take legal action against those responsible for this potentially irreversible environmental damage.

Hemantha Withanage, the outspoken leader of the CEJ, expressed grave concerns regarding the construction of a dagoba on Batalegala Rock. Withanage made it clear that not only the individuals involved in the construction, but also the officials, including the Divisional Secretariat, would be held accountable for their roles in the controversial project.

The initiative to build the dagoba reportedly originated from a member of the "Youth Parliament," a body formed by the National Youth Services Council. While the intention behind the construction may have been to promote religious and cultural significance, critics argue that it comes at a great cost to the environment.

Batalegala Rock, known for its stunning natural beauty, is considered an environmentally sensitive area. The construction of a dagoba on top of the rock could potentially disrupt the delicate balance of the ecosystem, leading to irreversible damage to the unique flora and fauna that call this area home.

Numerous concerned citizens and environmental organizations have voiced their opposition to the project. They argue that the construction of a religious structure on such a sensitive site is not only detrimental to the environment but also sets a dangerous precedent for similar actions in the future.
