State Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Public Accounts (COPA Committee), revealed that the Ministry of Health is facing a critical issue as 1794 vehicles are currently unaccounted for, according to the recent Auditor General's report.
The COPA committee chairman emphasized that the report highlights the transfer of 259 vehicles from the ministry to external parties. Additionally, the report shed light on the deficiencies in the data system pertaining to vehicle administration, as noted by the auditor general.
An official from the Ministry of Health disclosed that among the missing vehicles, 679 are cars and 1115 are motorcycles. After discovering that a majority of the cars are not in the ministry's possession, they promptly requested the Motor Transport Department to cease issuing revenue licenses for those vehicles. Consequently, the issuance of revenue licenses for these vehicles has been halted.
Furthermore, the ministry officials expressed their challenges in obtaining detailed information regarding 425 vehicles, making it difficult to ascertain whether they were auctioned or misused.
Regarding the motorcycles, officials revealed that only information about eleven out of the 1115 motorcycles has been uncovered so far. They clarified that most of these motorcycles were allocated to field officers.
