In a recent media statement, Parliamentarian Prof. G.L Peiris shed light on the purpose of the parliamentary meeting scheduled for Sunday, emphasizing its focus on adopting a proposal for the restructuring of local debt.
Peiris, who represents the breakaway group Freedom People's Congress from the SLPP, expressed his concerns about the current government's tactics in passing potentially detrimental laws.
Speaking on the matter today (26), Prof. Peiris stressed the opposition's intention to rally and educate the public about what they perceive as oppressive actions by the government. He also accused government ministers and officials of misleading the people with their enticing rhetoric.
Additionally, Prof. Peiris referenced the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) remarks on the Central Bank Governor's statements, dismissing them as mere nominalities regarding the proposed restructuring of domestic debt. According to Peiris, this proposal was not an original suggestion from the IMF but rather a proposition put forth by the Sri Lankan government.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Peiris shared survey findings indicating that over one-third of the country's total population is unable to afford daily sustenance. In light of this distressing revelation, he called for a reconsideration of any detrimental recommendations.
