Three individuals were shot by unidentified assailants on a motorcycle near Dippitigoda 6 Kanuwa. The victims, who were allegedly planning to attend a meeting organized by State Minister Prasanna Ranaweera near the Kelaniya Regional Office, were targeted on the evening of June 25th.
A high-ranking official from the Kelaniya Police revealed that the primary target of the shooting was a person named Tharanga, and the two individuals accompanying him also suffered gunshot wounds.
Investigations have unveiled that Tharanga was previously apprehended by the police on suspicion of involvement in drug trafficking. He was subsequently released on bail in 2021 after a period of remand.
According to the police, the victims and a group of others were waiting to attend the meeting when two individuals on a motorcycle approached them and opened fire with a T56 firearm. Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants pursued the victims as they desperately fled for their lives, repeatedly discharging their weapons.
At the crime scene, the police discovered approximately fifteen spent bullet casings scattered across the area. Sources within the police force have disclosed that one of the victims had been residing in the Dippitigoda locality for several years before moving to Wellampitiya with their spouse and children.
Currently, the police have yet to receive any information regarding the identities or whereabouts of the suspects who fled the scene after the shooting attack.
