Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera has accused social media platforms supporting Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayaka of disseminating false information regarding fuel shortages.
Minister Wijesekera emphasized the need for stronger media laws in Sri Lanka to counter such misleading narratives.
Speaking at a press conference held yesterday, Minister Wijesekera addressed the misreporting of the decision to suspend offering fuel on credit. He clarified that the misinformation had led to rumors about a shortage of 95 octane fuel, which he adamantly denied.
The minister strongly condemned the spread of such false rumors, attributing them to social media platforms aligned with the JVP.
"The news on the decision to suspend offering fuel on credit had been misreported, creating a false impression of a shortage of 95 octane fuel," Minister Wijesekera stated. He highlighted the damaging impact of such incidents and called for the enactment of more stringent media laws to prevent the dissemination of misleading information.
