Arrest Warrant Issued for Wimal Weerawansa for Failing to Appear in Court over UN High Commissioner’s Visit Case

Colombo Magistrate Prasanna de Alwis has issued an arrest warrant for Member of Parliament Wimal Weerawansa, who failed to appear in court for a case related to obstructing the road during the visit of United Nations High Commissioner Prince Said Al Hussain to Sri Lanka.

The incident in question dates back to 2016 when Prince Said Al Hussain, the United Nations Human Rights Commissioner, visited Sri Lanka. Wimal Weerawansa stands accused of causing public disruption by blocking roads and staging protests in front of the United Nations office in Colombo.

During the court hearing held today, Wimal Weerawansa, named as the primary defendant, was notably absent. Additionally, another defendant in the case, MP Weerakumara Dissanayake, also failed to appear in court. However, Dissanayake's lawyer submitted a medical report on his behalf to explain his absence.

The arrest warrant issued by Magistrate Prasanna de Alwis reflects the court's intention to take appropriate action to ensure the presence of Wimal Weerawansa in the ongoing case. The proceedings will continue as scheduled, allowing the legal process to unfold accordingly.
