Ven. Prof. Medagoda Abhayatissa Thera, a well-known Buddhist monk, publicly criticized President Ranil Wickremesinghe for his statements regarding the Department of Archaeology.

The Thera expressed his concerns, stating that the President's remarks undermine the diligent efforts made to preserve Buddhist heritage through private funding.

Speaking to the press following a meeting with the Chief Prelates of the prestigious Malwathu and Asgiri Chapters, Ven. Abhayatissa Thera voiced his strong opposition to President Wickremesinghe's recent comments on the historic Kurundi temple. The monk asserted that the President's understanding of the area's history was flawed, leading to erroneous statements.

The Archeological Department Director General, Prof. Anura Manatunga resigned from his post following the meeting with the President.
