A groundbreaking surgical achievement took place at the Colombo Army Hospital on Thursday (June 01) as the world's largest and heaviest kidney stone, weighing a staggering 801 grams, was successfully removed. This remarkable feat has earned the hospital a coveted spot in the Guinness World Records.
Led by Consultant Urologist Lieutenant Colonel Dr. K. Sutharshan, Head of the Genito Urinary Unit at the Colombo Army Hospital, the surgical team conducted the intricate procedure with expertise. Assisting Dr. Sutharshan were Captain (Dr) W.P.S.C Pathirathna and Dr. Thamasha Premathilaka. Consultant Anaesthetists Colonel (Dr) U.A.L.D Perera and Colonel (Dr) C.S Abeysinghe also played crucial roles during the surgery.
The kidney stone, measuring an astonishing 13.372 cm in length, was removed during the procedure, marking a significant milestone in medical history. The successful surgery garnered immediate attention, and the removed stone, or calculus, was promptly exhibited to Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, the Commander of the Army. The Director General of Army Health Services, Major General P.A.C Fernando USP, and Lieutenant Colonel Dr. K. Sutharshan, who led the surgical team, presented the stone at the Army Headquarters.
