Gampaha District Member of Parliament, Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, asserted today (13) that he sees himself as a capable leader who can guide the country forward. He made this statement while addressing journalists at a war hero celebration held in Ranawiru village.
During the event, Fonseka emphasized the importance of acknowledging and honoring the sacrifices made by war heroes. He lamented the apparent neglect of these brave individuals by both the current government and the general public. He expressed his concern over the fading memory of the war and the diminishing recognition of the contributions made by war heroes.
Drawing attention to certain lands in the north-east region that were acquired to establish military camps, Fonseka acknowledged the possibility of returning some of these lands to their original owners. However, he criticized the use of political interests as a basis for retaining these lands and condemned any attempt to undermine or disregard the armed forces for the sake of garnering votes in the North and East. He voiced his opposition to such actions and labeled them as cowardly.
Furthermore, Fonseka criticized the current regime, characterizing it as weak and lacking in courage. He highlighted the need for an intelligent and dedicated leader who can effectively address the challenges faced by the country.
While acknowledging the public's curiosity about his potential candidacy in the next presidential election, Mr. Fonseka stated that it is a challenging question to answer. He emphasized the importance of the people's sacrifices in electing the right leadership and expressed his willingness to consider proposals if the country's citizens unite behind a suitable candidate.
Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka concluded his remarks by affirming his personal belief in his leadership capabilities. He expressed his conviction that he sees a leader capable of guiding the country's future when he looks at himself in the mirror at home.
