Kanchana Wijesekera, the Minister of Power and Energy, held a constructive meeting with Robert Kaproth, the visiting US Deputy Assistant Secretary to the Treasury, earlier today. The discussions centered around the ongoing energy sector reforms in Sri Lanka and the country's commitments to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
During the meeting, Minister Wijesekera and Deputy Assistant Secretary Kaproth reviewed the progress made in the past 12 months, addressing the challenges related to price reforms, and discussed the balance sheet restructuring of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC). Additionally, they explored the proposed new electricity act and the assistance required to further strengthen the energy sector.
The discussion was attended by several notable figures, including Doug Sonnek, the Deputy Chief of Mission, Jerrod Mason, the Director of International Monetary Policy at the US Treasury, Bill Block, the Treasury Attaché, Chris Powers, the Chief of Economic Growth in Sri Lanka at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and Daniel Moon, the US Embassy Economic Officer.
The meeting provided an opportunity for Sri Lanka to seek insights and guidance from the US Treasury and USAID representatives, given their expertise in international financial matters and economic development. Minister Wijesekera emphasized the importance of collaboration and support from the international community to ensure successful implementation of the energy sector reforms and meet the commitments made to the IMF.
