A group of 39 politicians, including Members of Parliament (MPs) and Ministers, has decided to withdraw a petition filed before the Court of Appeal against General Shavendra Silva, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), and several others concerning the events that took place on May 9, 2022. The decision to withdraw the petition was made after the Minister of Public Security assured the court of a thorough investigation into the incidents.

The petition had been initiated by 39 politicians, including MPs and Ministers, led by individuals such as Bandula Gunawardene, Prasanna Ranatunga, Shehan Semasinghe, and Prasanna Ranaweera, who had been affected by the violence that occurred on May 9.

During the hearing of the petition at the Court of Appeal on May 22, the Additional Solicitor General, representing the Minister of Public Security, informed the court that the Minister had confirmed a systematic investigation would be conducted regarding the events that transpired on May 9, 2022. In light of this assurance, President's Counsel Sanjeewa Jayawardene, representing the petitioners, requested permission from the court to withdraw the petition, stating that the petitioners were satisfied with this development.

Upon considering the presented facts, the bench of justices, headed by the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne, and comprising Justice A. Marikkar, allowed the petition to be withdrawn as per the request of the petitioning party
