The Sri Lankan government has announced that it will appoint a new Inspector General of Police (IGP) at the end of next month. The current IGP, Mr. CD Wickramaratne, has served in the post for over three years and his three-month extension of service is scheduled to end on June 26th.
The three candidates who have been proposed for the post of IGP are Van Nilantha Jayawardene, Lalith Patinayake, and Deshabandu Thennakone. All three candidates have extensive experience in law enforcement and have held several key positions within the Sri Lanka Police Department.
The appointment of a new IGP is considered crucial, particularly given the current challenges faced by the Sri Lanka Police Department. In recent months, there have been several high-profile incidents of crime and violence, including a spate of robberies and murders, which have put the department under scrutiny.
