Three-Wheeler Trade Unions Refuse to Reduce Fares Despite Drop in Fuel Prices

Three-wheeler trade unions in Sri Lanka have stated that they will not reduce fares even if the price of petrol is reduced by 7 rupees per liter. According to current rates, three-wheelers charge 100 rupees for the first kilometer and 80 rupees for the second kilometer. However, most three-wheelers charge 120 rupees for the first kilometer and 100 rupees for the second kilometer.

The unions have cited the limited amount of petrol they are allowed to purchase per week as a reason for not reducing fares. As per the code, three-wheelers are only allowed to purchase 8 liters of petrol per week, forcing them to operate at higher prices.

This announcement comes after the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation decided to reduce the price of four types of fuel. The price of a liter of Ceylon Petrol Octane 92 has been reduced by 7 rupees, Ceylon Petrol Octane 95 by 10 rupees, Ceylon White Diesel by 15 rupees and Ceylon Super Diesel by 135 rupees. The new prices are 333 rupees for a liter of Ceylon Petrol Octane 92, 365 rupees for a liter of Lanka petrol 95 octane, 310 rupees for a liter of Lanka white diesel and 330 rupees for a liter of Lanka super diesel.

The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation has stated that the price of a liter of Ceylon kerosene remains unchanged at 295 rupees and the price of a liter of Ceylon industrial kerosene remains unchanged at 330 rupees.
