Contempt Of Court Cases Against Finance Ministry Secretary: Supreme Court Postpones Hearing Till May 22

The Supreme Court has ordered the postponement of two petitions filed against Finance Ministry Secretary Mr. Mahinda Siriwardena for contempt of court on May 22.

The petitions were called before a five-member bench led by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya today (30).

The Attorney General presented the facts before the court and requested for time to file the documents related to this case.

The five-member Supreme Court bench, which allowed the request, then set a date for hearing the petition on May 22.

The petitions were filed by Ranjith Maddumabandara, General Secretary of the Samagi Jana Balavega and Vijitha Herath, Member of Parliament of the NPP.

The Supreme Court had issued an interim order to the Secretary of the Ministry of Finance on the 3rd of last year, preventing the withholding of the funds allocated through the 2023 budget for holding the LG polls.

The two petitions have been submitted alleging that the Secretary of the Ministry of Finance has insulted the court by not complying with the interim order.
