Social media activist Sepal Amarasinghe appeared before the Colombo Chief Magistrate Prasanna Alwis today and apologized unconditionally for insulting the sacred tooth relic and thereby hurting the sentiments of the Buddhist people.
Accordingly, the court decided to close the proceedings. When the case related to this incident was taken up Sepal Amarasinghe also apologized to the complainant Buddhist Information Center Aguruwelle Jinananda Thero and others present in court.
He was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on 5th January after making several controversial statements about the Sri Dalada Maligawa on his YouTube channel.
His arrest was based on a directive issued by the IGP after President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s attention was drawn to the matter by the Mahanayake Theros of the Malwathu and Asgiriya sects.
