A National People’s Power (NPP) meeting held in the Weerambugedara divisional secretariat in Polgahawela had come under attack on Tuesday night by an unidentified group. The meeting had been organised to set up the party’s Panagamuwa division council and was underway when the incident took place.
Three NPP supporters including pradeshiya sabha councillor Somaratne Edirisinghe were injured and hospitalised for treatment. The group had also damaged a parked vehicle and a shop near the meeting location before fleeing the spot.
The group had arrived to launch the attack when the Chief guest Kurunegala District Secretary of the NPP Marine Engineer H.M.P. Ratnayake, the Chief Incumbent of the area temple, businessmen and other area residents were carrying out the discussion.
Weerambugedara Police are carrying out further investigations into the incident.
