The Commissioner General of Elections Commission Saman Sri Ratnayake has assured that local government polls will be held before March 20 and new members will thereafter be announced by gazette.

He confirmed the EC has the necessary legal backing to hold the elections despite claims the new appointment of a delimitation commission will curtail their powers.
