Facebook posts claiming Australian cricketer Glenn Maxwell has visited Sri Lankan cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka in prison after his arrest over allegations of sexual assault are false. A large number of such posts claiming Maxwell, Ponting, Finch and various other cricketers have visited Gunathilaka and also extended their support to him have taken social media by storm. However, there is no truth to these claims.

No such news has been reported by Australian or other international media, while the relevant cricketer has neither made such claims on their personal social media accounts.

Fact-Checking Organisation, Fact Crescendo also covering the story said local journalist Azzam Ameen covering the world cup in Australia confirmed the news was false. It appears that many of these posts are sarcastic and have however managed to mislead the general public who have been unable to grasp the irony in the post.
