Nine individuals have lodged complaints with the Welikada Police Station against the Consulate of Hungary in Sri Lanka over illegal construction blocking the access road of the Royal Gardens apartment complex in Rajagiriya.
The alleged construction is being carried out on a property owned by Rohan Nanayakkara, the Honorary Consul General of Hungary. In a letter to the Royal Gardens Residents Association on October 13th, Nanayakkara claimed that the Consulate of Hungary in Sri Lanka was the occupier of the premises.
Following the complaints lodged by the residents of the apartment complex, the Police asked Nanayakkara to immediately stop construction and write and obtain permission from the Sri Jayawardenapura-Kotte Municipal Council prior to any construction. During the initial investigation, Nanayakkara admitted that the Consulate had no construction approval.
Subsequent to the initial police inquiry, Capt. Anil Jayasinghe, Secretary of the Royal Garden Residents Association has written to the Sri Jayawardenapura-Kotte Municipal Commissioner informing the latter of the alleged construction blocking the common access way to the apartment complex.
Following the letter from the Residents Association, the Commissioner has written to the Consul General directing him to immediately stop the ongoing construction and present all documents including the deeds and plans. The officials of the Municipal Council have reportedly visited the Royal Garden premises to observe the construction.
Despite the Police warning and the warnings the directives issued by the council, the gate and column construction continues, the Royal Garden residents alleged. They said columns had been raised to the level needed to install a roller gate.
