SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa claimed his father Mahinda Rajapaksa was the pioneer in bringing internet to Sri Lanka. He said people are now using internet brought by his father to criticize him and the Rajapaksa family. “They type on Facebook calling him Maina using the internet he introduced. I am called Podi Maina” he said. The MP made these comments at the SLPP meeting held in Nawalapitiya yesterday. 

However, as pointed out by many on social media in reality internet was introduced to Sri Lanka in 1999 when Mahinda Rajapaksa was a member of the opposition. Another Twitter user also pointed out that Professor Abhaya Induruwa is considered the father of Internet in Sri Lanka.
