It is reported that a rural school in Wellawaya had held a fair on the school grounds to gather funds to attend All-island games. Many rural schools are underfunded and lack the facilities necessary for students to compete at national and international level sporting events. According to reports, this initiative was carried out by the Wellawaya Monaragala Weherayaya Vidyalaya.
