Transport Minister Bandula Gunawardena says due to the financial crisis, the government does not have enough income to pay its monthly salaries. He stated this while replying to a question asked by Member of Parliament Ashok Abeysinghe in Parliament regarding the conversion of the Polgahawela Kurunegala railway into a dual carriageway.

The Minister of Transport further said that due to the stagnation of state revenue, it is not possible to pay a large number of payments due this year. Giving examples for that, the Minister said that over one hundred billion rupees have to be paid for the completed projects of the Road Development Authority.

He said the issue cannot be resolved by printing money due to IMF regulations.
