The Finance and Media Ministry today increased Petrol Octane 92 and the Auto Diesel prices by Rs 6 and Rs 4 respectively.
The Finance Ministry added Diesel should have been increased by Rs 9.59, but considering its adverse effects the government has decided to increase it by only Rs 4.
The fuel prices have been increased according to Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera's fuel price formula.
The increase, however, has been announced despite the appreciation of the Sri Lankan currency.
This is the first time fuel prices have been increased since the outbreak of the political crisis on October 26.
Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa's purported government reduced fuel prices several times during its 51-day stay in power.
The current government too returned to power in December, last year, with another reduction in fuel prices.
