UPFA Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa made a strange claim in Parliament earlier today when he said the Constitutional Council had come under the influence of a certain "religious sect."
"Only the judges who belong to this religious sect get promoted as Supreme Court judges. Promotions are not given based on seniority," Weerawansa said while speaking in Parliament today.
Weerawansa said the same fate had befallen the country's cricket team.
However, when asked to name the judges who belong to the religious sect, Weerawansa demanded a two-day parliamentary debate on the conduct of the Constitutional Council.
He said we would disclose the details on the religious leanings of the judges and the inclinations of the council during a parliamentary debate.
However, the Parliamentarian added that the religious sect was funded by the US.
The Constitutional Council set up under the provisions of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution comprises 10 members and is chaired by Speaker Karu Jayasuriya. Opposition Leader and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is also an ex-officio member of the Constitutional Council.
