A 38-year-old labourer, a resident of Periyamulla, Negombo, has been arrested for involvement in the murder of a dog.
Charlie, a labrador, was doused in kerosene and set alight in Koppara junction, Negombo on December 31 night.
He succumbed to his injuries the following day.
The incident has sparked nationwide anger and protest and people ask for the Animal Welfare Bill to be enacted to prevent cruel and inhumane acts of this nature against animals.
There are calls for justice to be served for Charlie and all other animals treated cruelly.
Animal rights activists and politicians alike have lent their voice to demanding justice for Charlie who died a horrific death.
Police are on the look-out for more suspects.
