President Maithripala Sirisena congratulated Sheikh Hasina on her victory at the country's parliamentary elections.
"My heartiest congratulations to Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of Bangladesh on her resounding victory at the elections. The people of Bangladesh have placed unwavering trust in your leadership. Sri Lanka looks forward to increasing bilateral relations with Bangladesh," Sirisena tweeted this morning.
Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa also congratulated the Bangladeshi Prime Minister saying her leadership would steer the country towards prosperity.
Rajapaksa said, "I’d like to congratulate Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the Awami League, on their landslide victory at the General Elections held yesterday. I’m confident that your leadership will steer Bangladesh towards peace and prosperity."
Hasina won a third-straight term in Sunday's election, with the alliance led by her Awami League winning at least 288 of 300 seats.
The opposition alliance led by Kamal Hossain called Sunday's election "rigged" and "farcical" and demanded a new election held under a neutral authority.
Hasina has categorically denied the opposition's claims that the election was rigged.
