President Maithripala Sirisena has instructed all provincial governors to resign from office before midnight today, government sources said.
They added that Northern Province Governor Reginald Cooray, would not be reappointed while several others will be transferred to other provinces.
They also stated Cooray will be axed due to the current power struggle within the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP).
Cooray, a senior politician, is known to be a strong supporter of former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga who is currently on a mission to engineer an internal revolt in the SLFP.
A group of MPs representing the party have also held a discussion with the former President about their future course of action.
