Parliament Meet For First Time After Ranil Wickremesinghe's Swearing In: UPFA Decides To Appoint MR As Opposition Leader

December 18, 2018

The Parliament will meet at 1 PM today for the first time after Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's the swearing-in.

The UNP will sit as the ruling party while the UPFA will sit in the opposition ending their month-long boycott of Parliament.

At a meeting with President Maithripala Sirisena at the Presidential Secretariat a short while ago, the UPFA MPs decided to appoint former President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the opposition leader.

The UPFA will also appoint a new Chief Opposition Whip replacing Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

A group of SLFP parliamentarians previously said Nimal Siripala de Silva should tale up the opposition leader's post.

With this fresh development, however, TNA Leader R. Sampanthan will lose his position as the opposition leader.

It is learnt that Lakshman Kiriella, a senior Parliamentarian of the UNP, will retain his position as the Leader of the House.
