Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said a new political party under the name the 'National Democratic Front' would be formed soon.
Addressing the mass demonstration organized by the UNP at Galle Face Green this evening, Wickremesinghe said the proposal would be presented to the UNP Working Committee on Friday.
The objective of forming a new alliance, Wickremesinghe said, is to create a broad political front that will strengthen democracy.
The Prime Minister also stated that the UNP recognized the unitary status of the country and would not deviate from it when finding a solution to the national question.
He also urged the public to give him a two-thirds majority at the next Parliamentary election, to abolish the Executive Presidency.
Responding to the President's critical remarks yesterday, the Prime Minister said it was the "pan" (thachchiya) that faces the fire, not the fire.
He added that it was the people who gave him the strength to fight for democracy over the past 51 days.
Wickremesinghe thanked everyone who supported him during the political crisis.
