Former Presidnet Mahinda Rajapaksa has tendered his letter of resignation from the premiership. 

His son Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa confirmed that Rajapaksa has decided to resign from office to ensure political stability in the country. 

However, he added that the political coalition with President Maithripala Sirisena would continue. 

Rajapaksa is likely to announce his resignation in an "address to the nation" tomorrow.
