Parliament passed the confidence motion in support of UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe with 117 MPs voting in favour.
UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa presented the motion and party Vice Chairman Mangala Samaraweera seconded it.
The UNP and the TNA voted in favour of the motion while the JVP abstained from voting. However, JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake speaking in Parliament today added that his party would take every possible action to defeat the "coup".
Speaking in Parliament after the confidence motion was carried, Wickremesinghe thanked everyone who supported the confidence motion. He added it was the duty of all political parties to respect the constitutional provisions.
Commenting on the TNA's remarks, the ousted Prime Minister said he was committed to a political solution to the national question without dividing the country.
