President Maithripala Sirissna is likely to call a referendum if the Supreme Court rules against his move to dissolve Parliament, sources close to the President told Asian Mirror.
The Supreme Court's ruling on President Sirisena's gazette to dissolve Parliament is expected this week.
Addresssing an event in Polonnaruwa on Sunday, Sirisena said he would respect the Supreme Court decision and make necessary "political decisions" accordingly.
Although Sirisena had met Attorney General Jayantha Jayasuriya last evening, the details of the discussion were kept under wraps.
Informed sources said President Sirisena had already consulted his legal advisors on the possibility of holding a referendum on whether a Parliament election should be held.
There is no constitutional barrier blocking the President from holding a referendum on a matter of national importance.
