President Maithripala Sirisena is now at the centre of a fresh controversy with revelations that a plaque which acknowledged the contribution of late Prime Minister, D.S. Senanayake, and the opening of the renovated Iranamadu Tank in 1954 by then Agriculture Minister Dudley Senanayake has been completely destroyed and replaced with a plaque bearing the name of Sirisena.
The Sunday Times reported that journalists who visited the area had noticed the foundation stone had been destroyed.
President Sirisena, on Friday, declared open the Iranamadu tank after a reconstruction project. A new plaque has been put in place by provincial authorities attributing the project to Sirisena.
According to President Sirisena's biography, his family was given lands in the Polonnaruwa area under an agriculture project initiated by the late D.S. Senanayake.
