UNP Parliamentarian Lakshman Kriella said the discussion between President Maithripala Sirisena and UNF party leaders ended unsuccessfully. 

This is the second discussion that took place between the President and the UNF party leaders within a period of one week. 

"The President said he would not reappoint Ranil Wickremesinghe even if the entire Parliament - all 225 members - supported him," Kiriella said. 

The discussion came to an abrupt end when the President continued to shoot down the idea of appointing Wickremesinghe. 

The UNF party leaders, before meeting Sirisena, held an internal meeting, and decided not to backtrack on their demand to reappoint Wickremesinghe as the Prime Minister
