Speaker Karu Jayasuriya will hold a meeting with President Maithripala Sirisena this evening on the current political deadlock, the Speaker's Office confirmed.
The discussion will take place after the majoroty of Parliamentarians, in two successive votes taken via electronic method, proved that the newly-appointed Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa did not have a Parliamentary majority.
Manny MPs who spoke in Parliament today requested the Speaker to discuss the matter directly with President Sirisena and arrive at a solution.
Meanwhilem, the UNP parliamentary group has unanimously decided to demand party leader Rani Wickremesinghe's reinstatement as the Prime Minister.
This means the UNP will not discuss with the President the possibility of appoiting another UNP Parliamentarians to the Prime Minister's post to end the political crisis.
